“Η Χίος τιμά το 1821”
The island of Chios pays homage to the Greek Independence Revolution of 1821
Our island is free at last. Ayios Minas is waving at us with unshed tears, Virgin Mary smiling, our churches with their belfries rejoicing in chime.
Reflecting on the heroic past, we celebrate and envision the hopeful future, through honouring our history, shaping the vision of freedom and new life, which, covered in wreaths of glory and strength, loom over even death itself.
We shall always return, here on this fragrant land we will stand, amidst the houses that remind us of the sea. The island is beckoning, waving us towards her. Our hearts are lain amongst the shrubs and flowers, the smell of thyme, the masticha trees and tulips.
Fathers and grandfathers, a legacy of men tied to a ship’s wheel, forged on sea waters, they embrace their memories, as by divine intervention their fortunes are intertwined with their return to the holy lands of our blessed island.
It’s the miracle of the sea that shapes this island. It’s sea melodies, with promises of an evergreen spring, beauty and the light of the Aegean, moonlit nights. the fragrance of Greece. It’s looking back to the horizons of an ancient civilization full of light and wisdom.
